There is a wonder to life...and a wonder of life. Are you experiencing it?
Take an opportunity today (Sanctity of Human Life Sunday) to reinvigorate the vision that God gives a sacredness to all human life regardless of the situation. Today we invite you to grow in this through an amazing TED video where part of that wonder and divine influence is expressed by an artist/technologist/mathematician. (His words are powerful as well.) The other is a prayer list to use this week to seek God's work in various life devaluing situations.
Using art and technology, Alexander Tsiaras visualizes the unseen human body in powerful ways. Below is a short talk (about 10 minutes) by him with compelling facts of our created body. (If you just want to see the conception to birth video, it begins about 1:53.)
A few of the interesting facts he notes in this video:
- At 44 days the fetus has become "something that you can recognize."
- At nine weeks it "is really like a kind of little human being."
- At 25-28 days, the baby's heart, which resembles a "magnificent origami," is developing at a rate of one million cells per second.
- At 32 days the arms and hands are developing.
- Within five weeks you can start to see the heart's early atrium and ventricles. A week later the baby's heart is actually becoming mature.
- At 52 days the retina, nose, and fingers are developing.
- By the time the fetus is full-term, it has 60,000 miles of vessels inside its body—although only one mile of vessels are visible. The other 59,999 miles of vessels are quietly working to bring nutrients and dispose of waste.
- Tsiaras calls a pregnant woman's body a "walking immunological cardiovascular system that … can actually nurture and treat this child with the kind of marvel that is beyond our comprehension."
His closing: “The complexity of these [facts about human development], the mathematic models of how these are indeed done are beyond human comprehension. Even though I am a mathematician, I look at this with marvel: How do these instruction sets not make mistakes as they build what is us? It's a mystery; it's magic; it's divinity …. [It's] beyond any comprehension of any existing mathematics today.”
Week of Prayer for Sanctity of Human Life
Here you'll find some useful reminders, with a word from Scripture to help you pray, of the broad scope of life issues and enter into helping others with prayer that might be in life devaluing situations. May you respond to any calls to action God may bring as you pray this week.
Pray for those who value life to intercede in God-honoring ways. Pray for God-lead moments of connection between those who value life and those who are not, whether in abortion, abuse of any kind, slavery, etc.
Matthew 5:16 “…let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”
Pray for those who are victims of de-valuing of life or experience life de-valuing circumstances (such as the homeless, mentally ill, abuse victims, bullying, etc.)
Isaiah 58:6-7 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Pray for forgiveness, redemption and healing. Pray for those who have turned from life de-valuing practices (racism, abuse, etc.). Pray that they receive the healing needed in their lives, that their testimonies will help change the political, social and spiritual mindset.
Psalm 107:14,20 "He sent His word and healed them". He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke their bands apart."
Psalm 147:3 "He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds."
Pray for abortion to end. Pray for the truth about abortion to be brought to the light through media, entertainment industry, churches, judicial and political systems.
Mark 4:22 "For nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been secret, but that it should come to light."
Pray for all the pregnancy resource centers in America, that they will continue to be built up and equipped for every good work and receive support and attention in their communities.
Ephesians 2:10 "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
Lamentations 2:19 "Arise, Cry aloud in the night at the beginning of the night watches, pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord, Lift up your hands to Him for the life of you little ones."
Pray for revival of hearts and minds of young and old. To work redemptively in the world choosing “life” practices over “death” practices. Pray for people to get involved in positive ways in their communities, and at the national level.
Deuteronomy 30:19-20 “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him.”
Pray for pastors to fulfill their God given roles and to preach the truth about the value of human life. Pray that they listen to God first and His Word.
Proverbs 31:8,9 "Open your mouth for the dumb, For the rights of all unfortunate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend the right of the afflicted and needy."
