Father’s Day: A Heavenly Perspective of Fatherhood (Psalm 25)

Father’s Day is a day typically set aside to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. The Bible is the ultimate instruction book for life here on earth, including instructions for Christian men raising their children.

Ephesians 6:4 is a summary of instructions for the father, “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” Introducing his children to Scripture appears to be a father’s first responsibility.

Being a parent can be a beautifully chaotic season. Thankfully, we have a Heavenly Father who never tires, and is the ultimate model for fathers to abide by. I pray the following message from Psalms 25 be an encouragement to Fathers and those who step into the fatherhood role.

Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. -Psalm 25:4-5

Our souls are anchored with hope. The Greek meaning of hope is "to wait or trust." It is an indication of certainty, or a strong and confident expectation. By clinging to our God, the Father, all day, every day, we can be assured that He will be equipping us for the battle we are in or approaching.

Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you, Lord, are good. -Psalm 25:7

If God the Father collects our tears and is nearest to us in brokenhearted times, we are assured that He doesn’t leave or forsake us. It is beyond our understanding why He would continue to forgive us and our wretched sins time and time again. Because He first loved us – according to His great and overwhelming love, He continues to pursue us.

He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way. All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of His covenant. -Psalm 25:9-10

God the Father has ransomed us. With His unending love, He helps us come to the end of ourselves, and meet Him to complete the good work He has assigned for us.

The Lord confides in those who fear Him; he makes His covenant known to them. My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only He will release my feet from the snare. -Psalm 25:14-15

The burdens of our hearts are removed when we walk with God the Father. His ways will be known when we are fervently seeking Him.

Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. -Psalm 25:16

Loneliness and affliction pierce the soul of saint and sinner alike. The strength to continue to push through those obstacles and overcome, day after day, is not of man-made strength. God the Father has shown us unmerited favor and we can call on Him to find peace in our souls.

Let's pray:

Our Heavenly Father, reveal Yourself, especially to the earthly fathers today. We thank You for the hope that You give to us, through Your Son, Jesus Christ. We ask you to help those who are in various seasons of fatherhood to be faithfully walking with You, so that they can become more like You. Guide them as their feet stumble and their hearts are heavy. Remind them of Your unfailing love and goodness and provide them opportunities to share You with their children and community. In Your Son’s most precious and holy name we pray, Amen.
